Chapter 11 begins to discuss the methods that a student can utilize to successfully plan out and write a research paper. Braziller states that the first step is to choose a topic through research. In order to choose a topic, one must first brainstorm depending what they are curious about. When researching topics, it is key to use scholarly sources such as google scholar. The process of brainstorming and researching a topic should be interesting and easy but not a challenge. Once you have identified a topic it is essential to create subtopics in order to plan out and organize ones writing. Braziller outlines that it is essential to form working research questions. These questions help strengthen their evidence and their topic that is chosen. The topic can then be transferred to a proposal, which is considered the final draft of the research question/questions. According to Braziller from this point the student is tasked with the job of researching and developing their knowledge about their topic to begin forming a draft or as one would say a “shitty first draft”. She gives this advice to help educate students on how to successfully write a research paper and that it takes more work than just beginning to write.
